What changed for EV leases
The federal commercial clean vehicle credit that leasing companies used to pass through on EV leases (section 45W) does not apply to vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. A lease written today does not include a federal tax credit.
Any lease credit or bonus you see on an EV now is money from the manufacturer or its finance company. It can still be large, it changes month to month, and it often applies only to certain models, trims and terms.
What makes an EV lease a good one
Compare these on the exact car, in writing:
- The selling price of the car before any lease credit
- Each manufacturer incentive, shown as its own line on the worksheet
- The money factor and residual for the month
- Fees, add-ons and the total due at signing
- Mileage allowance that fits your real driving, including commuting across SoCal
Living with an EV in Southern California
Home charging is what makes an EV easy. Check whether you can install a Level 2 charger where you park, and look at your utility's EV rate plan before you sign.
If you mostly charge in public, map the fast chargers on your usual routes in the Inland Empire, Orange County or Los Angeles first.
How we shop an EV lease
Tell us the EVs you are considering. We ask franchised dealers for written lease numbers on the same car and walk you through each line so you can compare fairly. Some EV brands sell only direct to consumers, so there is no dealer to shop; we will tell you when that is the case.
Green Light Auto Broker is an autobroker. All new cars arranged for sale are subject to price and availability from the selling franchised new car dealer.
Questions
Is there still a federal tax credit on EV leases?
No federal credit applies to vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. A lease credit on a current EV offer is manufacturer or finance company money, so ask to see it as its own line.
Is it better to lease or buy an EV?
Leasing shifts the risk of resale value and battery technology to the leasing company, which is why many EV drivers lease. If you drive a lot or keep cars a long time, buying can make more sense.
Do you have EV lease deals right now?
Current deals are on the deals page. Programs change monthly, so text us the EV you want and we will ask dealers for written numbers on that exact car.
